Q&A With NEXTEL Cup Raybestos Rookie Contender Brian Vickers

Camp & Associates, Inc.

BRIAN VICKERS, NO. 25 GMAC CHEVROLET. VICKERS WILL COMPETE FOR RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE YEAR IN THE NEXTEL CUP SERIES.

DO YOU HAVE MORE CONFIDENCE SINCE YOU WON THE BUSCH SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP LAST SEASON?

"I think it's a different series, a different group of guys, and this is the best of the best. Obviously winning the championship instilled some inner confidence, which is important as an athlete, but I've still got to earn the respect of these other competitors that I'll be racing this year. It is a whole different deal. We're going to go out there and try to let this GMAC Chevy team chemistry grow and mold and that's where our success will come from."

WOULD YOU FEEL DISAPOINTED IF YOU DIDN'T WIN A RACE?

"Winning is what I do this for. I love to win. I'm a very, very competitive person. If we don't get a win I'm not going to be happy about it. I'm not going to be really down or disappointed because it is a new team and the bar has been raised by great rookies like Jimmie Johnson but at the same time the key is the chemistry built within the team and how they communicate and work together. It's all about the people. I feel like we are going to have that. I feel like we are going to have that right off the bat. We got a head start on it last year running those four races. But that's where it's important. It doesn't mean that if we don't get that right away it's not going to come. It doesn't mean that any one person is wrong. You've just got to give it time."

WHAT WAS THE ONE THING THAT YOU LEARNED LAST YEAR IN THOSE FOUR RACES THAT WILL HELP YOU THIS SEASON?

"Patience. Anytime I've ever run a race that's the biggest thing that I've learned is patience. It also helped me learn some of the people that I'm racing against which is always very important and earn the respect of some of my competitors which will pay off, hopefully, at some of these racetracks. And just seat time, get out there and experience the whole NEXTEL Cup thing because it's different. The introductions, the pressure, the media, everything is different. It's good to get a head start on that."

WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE TO WIN RAYBESTOS® ROOKIE OF THE YEAR?

"It's going to be tough. With all the great competitors top to bottom, and not only are the good drivers but the good teams that are backing them will make a huge difference. I feel like it's going to come down to the wire, just like the championship did last year in the Busch Series. We're going to go out there and do our best."

A LOT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU OVER THE LAST 25 MONTHS.

"It's happened really quick. I've been very fortunate. Ricky (Hendrick, owner of Vicker's Busch car) gave me a great opportunity, an opportunity of a lifetime, and I've been trying to do the most I can with it with the great equipment and the people that he's given me."

BECAUSE THINGS HAVE HAPPENED SO QUICKLY, HAVE YOU HAD A CHANCE TO TAKE TIME AND ENJOY YOUR SUCCESS?

"Ricky and I both took some time off in December and enjoyed it. Now it's go time again. Now it's time to get back to work. I've had a little bit of time to enjoy it but not as much as I'd like, I'm sure."
